Olympic games were first introduced in 776 BC and modern olympic games were introduced in 1896. But Indian team participated for first time in 1920 Antwerp Olympics. First Indian woman to participate in Olympics is M Leela Rao , participated in 1956 held in Melbourne , Australia.

Indian hockey team won total 12 medals in Olympics includes 8 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze. Indian hockey team is most successful team in Olympics history , it won 83 matches out of 134 played matches . India won gold medal in hockey for 8 times -

The 2016 Summer Olympic is 31 th event of Summer olympic held in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . Total 28 games were involved in 2016 Summer olympic, two new games rugby and golf  were started for the first time. Total 207 countries participated , Kosovo and south Sudan participated for the first time in 2012 Summer olympics. The mascot of the 2016 Summer olympic was Vinicius and Tom . 

India won two medals a silver and a bronze  in the 2016 Summer Olympics . PV Sindhu won silver medal in badminton . Deepa Karmakar is the first Indian woman to participate in gymnast , participated in the 2016 summer Olympics , got the fourth rank .
