Asian games played for the first time in 1951 held at Delhi , hosted by India . Total 11 countries participated in 1951 Asian games . This is the first edition of Asian games . Asian games is the second largest sport event in the world after the Olympic  games . Total 489 athletes of 11 countries participated in the first Asian games .

Total 77 events in 8 sports has occured in second Asian Games . The participating nations of second Asian games - Afghanistan , Cambodia , Ceylon , Indonesia , Japan , Israel, Philippines , Myanmar , China , South Korea , Thailand , Pakistan , North Borneo India , Hong kong and Malaya . Japan got the first rank in second Asian games followed by Philippines and South Korea . India got the fifth rank with total 17 medals .

The game official opened by Hirohito , and the torch has lighted by Mikio Oda . The game has official opened by Sukarno and torch has been lighted by Effendi Saleh . Main event of the fourth Asian games occured at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium . First time in history of Asian games , the athletes and participating nations decreased in comparision with previous edition . The participating nations - Afghanistan , Cambodia , Ceylon , Japan , Indoneshia , India , Hong Kong , Sarawak , North Borneo , Philippines , Singapore , Pakistan , Malaya South Korea and Thailand .
