Preface - Cricket has its own importance in Indian Sports. It is the most popular sport in India and the second most popular sport all over  the world. In this article,  will discuss about the origin of cricket in world and origin of Cricket in India , Test Match, T-20 Match , One day Match and about the importance and popularity of cricket in Indian audience. 



1. When did the Cricket Originate - The known beginning of Cricket is considered to be in the 16th century. It can't be definitely said that when did the Cricket originate but the first definite written refrence about origin of cricket is from the end of 16th century. Cricket was considered as children's game for many generations. It was adopted by adults in the beginning of 17th Century.


2. Where did the Cricket Originate -

 It is believed that the cricket originated in South- East England in the mid 16 th century. In India its initially played by british sailors at Cambay near Mumbai in 1721. Cambay is now situated in Gujarat.


3. What is the origin name of Cricket

At the beginning of origin the cricket was spelled as creckett that means stick.The word cricket has been derived from the french word criquet that means wooden post . 


4. First Cricket Club of India

The first cricket club of India is Calcutta Cricket Club. It was established in 1792. The oldest cricket club of the world is Marylebone Cricket Club , MCC founded in 1787. Calcutta Cricket Club is the second oldest cricket club in the world. 


There are three formats of Cricket -

2. One Day format of Cricket 

3. T- 20 format of Cricket


5. When did the test format of Cricket is introduced - 

The first test match was played between USA and Canada in 1844 but this match is not officialy played. The first official test match was played between Australia and England on 15 March 1877. This match was held in Melbourne , Australia.                                                                  

First test Match of India was held on 25 June 1932 vs England. England won the match. Cottari Kanakaiya Naidu is the captain of Indian Cricket Team during the first test match. 




6. When did the One day format of Cricket introduced - 

The first One day match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium, Australia between Australia and England on 5 January 1971. Australia won the toss and elected to field first. Ray Illingworth is the Captain of England Cricket team and Bill Lawry was the Captain of Australia Cricket team. Australia won the match and the player of the match is John John Edrich.

India played its first One day Match at England on 13 July 1974 against England. England won the toss and elected to field first. Ajith wadekar was the captain of Indian team and Mike Deness was the captain of England. John Edrich scored 90 runs in 97 balls and selected as the player of the match. England won the match by 4 wickets with 23 ball remaining. 


7. When did the T-20 Format introduced - 

The first T-20 cricket was played on 17 February 2005 between Australia and New zeland at Eden Park , Auckland, New Zeland. Australia defeated New zeland. 
India played its first T-20 match at South Africa during 2006-07 series . Captain of Indian team was Virendra Sehwag.

9. Glossary of Cricket - 

  • LBW  - Its full form is leg before wicket. It is one of the ways, by this a batsman can be dismissed in the sport of cricket.
  • Chinaman - It is term used for googly or unusual delivery bowled by a bowler.
  • Slip -It is area behind the batsman on the off side of field. 
  • Free hit - It is a delivery in which batsman can't be dismissed by any other methods instead of run out.It is provided after a no - ball. 
  • Silly Point -It is a position on the off side , square of the batsman's wicket and very near the batsman. 
  • Third Man -Its position is behind the wicketkeeper on the off side. 
  • Maiden Over - A over in which no runs is scored by the batsman against the bowler. In maiden over the runs scored by leg byes and byes are not counted because these are not scored against the bowler. 
  • Hit Wicket - It is method of dismissal of batsman in Cricket. When batsman hits wickets by bat while playing a delivery it is called hit wicket.
